How to Write a Great Expository Essay

Basically an expository essay is an essay that presents other people’s point of view fairly or is simply used to give information. There are a few parts of doing a great expository essay and they’re not much different from doing any other essay.

  • Investigate
  • Review and Outline
  • Write

As you can see, it’s roughly the same amount of main areas as doing any other kind of essay you’ll encounter in your academic writing career. Let’s look at the first of these: investigate.

Investigate

This takes the place of research, but is essentially the same thing. You’ll look into sources such as other people’s views or accounts or whatever is on hand. The amount to sift through may not be as extensive or vast as the written material when you research via looking through books and such, but you’ll approach it the same way. As is the case with research, note taking is extremely important. The quality of your notes don’t matter as long as you can read them and they touch on essential parts of the story.

Review and Outline

This takes the place of reflecting. What you’ll do here is look over your notes and accounts collected and begin to structure your essay. Unlike reflecting, you’re not really looking to come up with a thesis statement or anything, but this is the stage where you will consider your introduction into the story, event, etc.

Write

Here is your heavy lifting. This is where you’ll want to establish the flow of your essay, it’s important to do this so that your essay doesn’t become too bogged down by far too many facts. It’s a balancing act since expository essay are heavily based on facts and not personal opinion. The main point here is to be even handed with your facts or to present them in a way that isn’t far too wordy

You’ll need a strong introduction for the essay, this is a given. If you haven’t gotten the hang of writing an interesting essay or being even handed with the facts, you’ll want a very strong introduction to soften the blow of dense writing. The conclusion should tie up everything discussed in the essay and will be as strong as the body of essay.
