Brainstorming college essay topics
Writing a college essay topic can be an easy task if you come up with the right topic. No pressure of course, but your thesis statement could completely make or break your grade. If you have hit a stumbling block on what topic you should write about, the best course of action that you can take is to sit and brainstorm.
Take the Time
Brainstorming should not be a five minute activity. In order to really create an interesting topic, you need to make an investment of at least fifteen minutes a day for a couple of days. This may seem a little extreme, but when you lock yourself into the first topic that comes to mind, you may close off a number of potential ideas that could make an essay come to life. Properly prepare a schedule to get your essay done in the allotted amount of time, so that you are not procrastinating and rushing at the end.
Write It Out
It doesn’t matter if you use a mind map, an outline, or a paragraph. The key is to just start writing out your ideas. Look at your own life. What do you question, wonder about, daydream about, witness, experience, feel or know. As you start writing out all of the associations as they come to mind you have a baseline to start with. On the second day, start writing out other ideas that link to the ones you wrote previously. After taking some time to get the thoughts out of your head, you may find yourself standing in the shower thinking, “I should write this down.” Giving yourself another opportunity after you get the initial process going may lead to more focused essay topics.
The basic who, what, where, when, why and how of any topic will lead to more associations to help you with your brainstorming. If you don’t know the answer to one of those questions, it could make for a fascinating paper that you can learn from. Once you complete this final phase, you probably have a few ideas to choose from, but keep your mind open for the rest of the day in case something else comes to mind. After you brainstorm, you are well on your way to start some basic research and creating your thesis.
Creating an essay topic can be fun and open up a lot of interesting concepts. Take the time to brainstorm your thoughts, write everything down, and ask questions. This will lead you to composing an interesting paper for both you and your audience.
