Easy Tips for Building up Your Essay Writing Skills

Think about anything you have attempted to do in your school life that was challenging – even if its related to extra-curricular activities? Didn’t you get better at it with practice? Whether you’re talking about basketball, running track, studying algebra, or even playing video games, everyone knows that the more you do anything, you get better at it.

  1. Tip One: PRACTICE! PRACTICE! PRACTICE! All great writers known this is true!
  2. In fact, what exactly will happen when you write something every day or several days a week?

The more you write, the more this magical thing begins to happen every time you sit down to the computer to write again—the words will come easier.

You’ll even notice new pathways in your mind opening and finding your way to a new vocabulary that you had lost from misuse which suddenly begins coming back the more you write.

You’ll notice that you become a better speaker, a better writer, and you’ll gain the confidence to believe in your own ideas, assertions, and insights.

Also, and this is important – you will begin to develop enough confidence in your writing that you will take more chances in order to create an interesting piece.

The only way I can tell you to get better at writing is to sit down and write every single day. I don’t mean web-surfing. I mean solid writing. This can be a personal journal or an essay in a course, as long as the writing of it enhanced your understanding of the essay form and the right style for you.

  3. Share your work with others who will constructively critique it and who will be brutally honest.
  4. What really helps is a carefully selected reviewer or someone whom you coach in the kinds of criticism you respond well too. Spend some times before the formal tutoring session

  5. Become as informed about what is going on in the world today!
  6. Becoming informed by reading the paper or watching quality news channels can make you feel something about contemporary issues in society that can fuel your work.

You never know when you might need a handy illustration of theories and concepts by comparing them to current situations.

  7. Read the authors you feel are strong technical writers.
  8. When my reviewers complain about my long, convoluted sentences,. That’s when I get out my Hemingway books. Hemingway was the master of short, declarative, sentences. I find my sentences improve reading him (As opposed to Faulkner, for example). Richard Ford is an excellent author as well and he is in the Hemingway tradition.
